About
The actual iteration of Eastman Double-X was introduced in 1959 and has not significantly changed since then. For over 65 years this film remains an all-purpose BW negative, equally suited for outdoor and studio shooting. Exposure range from -2EV to +2EV is effective under the sun and in low-light scenes.
Spectral sensitivity is well optimized for the skin tone, the contrast is distinctive but smooth, textures and nuances are rendered without excessive detail or annoying grain.
Double-X is the classic black and white film in every aspect. Think of a well-staged cinematic BW shot – you've seen it in dozens of famous movies. It appears in ‘Psycho’, ‘Schindler’s List’, ‘Raging Bull’, ‘Stranger Than Paradise’, ‘The Lighthouse’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Kill Bill’, ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, ‘Dead Man’, ‘Casino Royale’ and dosens other movies.
Photographers often shoot on Double-X 5222 hand-rolled in 35 mm cassettes. This all-round film has a huge photographic latitude and can be developed in many ways. Every time it produces a pleasing tone with attention to the person and a truly cinematic vibe. And you can always make great optical prints from the negative.

A lucky chance allows us to demonstrate Dehancer performance in direct comparison to film. The photographer took two similar shots – one on freshly-rolled film and another with an outdated smartphone.

A closer look reveals that with simple adjustments we achieved almost perfect matching in tonality, contrast and image structure. Of course, there are differences in camera angle and depth of field.
